J. Abling
Annapolis Tango – Teacher/Owner
A dancer/performer since the age of 10, J. Abling fell in love with Argentine tango in 2001 and immediately committed to it exclusively. Since, he has dedicated himself to continuously refining his dance as well as his teaching method, actively learning from some of the most renowned teachers in tango, including Jaimes Friedgen, Luciana Valle, Graciela Gonzales, Sebastian Arce & Mariana Montes, Carlitos Espinoza & Noelia Hurtado, Chicho Frumboli & Juana Sepulveda, and Tete Rusconi. Through these influences, he melds elements from various tango styles into a dance that is both natural and socially conscious. J.’s highly energetic classes and workshops blend hands-on practical technique, musical morsels, and flavorful figures with a touch of quirky humor. He approaches both tango and teaching with critical analysis in an organic and fluid fashion that engages, challenges, and enlightens participants of all levels. Many of his students have commented on J.’s ability to help them reach important and lasting breakthroughs in their dance. He has taught at major festivals and cities in the country including San Diego, San Francisco, Albuquerque, Tucson, Ann Arbor, Maui, Portland, Denver, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York City.
